Women’s Tennis Opens 2011 Ranked No. 7

The Duke women’s tennis team will kick off the 2011 season ranked No. 7 in the nation according to the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll of the spring season. The Blue Devils have five players ranked in top-100 in singles and three doubles teams ranked in the top-50.

"The ranking is a great accomplishment to this team, and this is where we belong,” women’s head coach Jamie Ashworth said. “The rankings are based a lot on last season, and we want to distinguish ourselves from last season and improve and get better. The team feels that they have more to prove, and they are determined to do that. This is a great team, and they are excited to start the season.”

Senior Reka Zsilinszka leads Duke coming in at the No. 4 spot nationally. This fall Zslinszka posted an 11-3 record with a semifinal berth at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships and her second consecutive trip the National Indoor Championships.

“This is Reka's highest ranking she has had at Duke, and it is a tribute to the consistency she showed this fall and the quality of wins she had,” Ashworth said.

Senior transfer Nadine Fahoum comes in at No. 25 after a 12-3 record this fall. Sophmore Mary Clayton earned the No. 43 spot, senior Ellah Nze comes in at No. 49 and senior Elizabeth Plotkin rounds out the singles rankings for the Blue Devils at No. 71. Nze registered a team-best 12-3 record along with Fahoum, while Plotkin went 7-2.

“The rest of the girls in the rankings are excited, and they want to get better and improve,” Ashworth said. “For the girls that aren’t in the rankings, they will have to work hard this season to get into the rankings and they are capable of doing that.”

Duke placed three tandems in the top-50 in the doubles rankings, with Nze and Fahoum taking the top spot for the Blue Devils at No. 4. Freshman Hanna Mar and Zsilinszka were slated in the No. 34 spot, while the duo of Clayton and junior Monica Gorny were picked No. 39.

The Blue Devils will open the 2011 season against Hawaii in Honolulu on Jan. 8, as part of the Hills Family Winter Trip. The matches are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. (EST).
